Raptor Observations of Delayed Explosive Activity in the High-redshift Γ-ray Burst

چکیده
The RAPid Telescopes for Optical Response (RAPTOR) system at Los Alamos National Laboratory observed GRB 060206 starting 48.1 minutes after γ-ray emission triggered the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) on-board the Swift satellite. The afterglow light curve measured by RAPTOR shows a spectacular re-brightening by ∼1 mag about 1 h after the trigger and peaks at R ∼ 16.4 mag. Shortly after the onset of the explosive re-brightening the OT doubled its flux on a time-scale of about 4 minutes. The total R-band fluence received from GRB 060206 during this episode is 2.3 × 10 erg cm. In the rest frame of the burst (z = 4.045) this yields an isotropic equivalent energy release of Eiso ∼ 0.7 × 10 50 erg in just a narrow UV band λ ≃ 130 ± 22 nm. We discuss the implications of RAPTOR observations for untriggered searches for fast optical transients and studies of GRB environments at high redshift. 0 γ - ray burst afterglows as probes of galactic and intergalactic dust
The amount and properties of high-redshift galactic and intergalactic (IG) dust are largely unknown, but could be investigated using multi-wavelength photometry of high-z objects that have a known intrinsic spectrum. Observations of γ-ray burst (GRB) afterglows appear to support the theoretical model of an adiabatic blast wave expanding into an external medium. In this model, the synchrotron pe...
متن کاملAbsorption of High Energy Gamma Rays by Interactions With Starlight Photons in Extragalactic Space at High Redshifts and the High Energy Gamma-Ray Background
In this paper, we extend previous work on the absorption of high energy γ-rays in intergalactic space by calculating the absorption of 10 to 500 GeV γ-rays at high redshifts. This calculation requires the determination of the high-redshift evolution of the intergalactic starlight photon field, including its spectral energy distribution out to frequencies beyond the Lyman limit. To estimate this...
متن کاملA Comptonization Model for the Prompt Optical and Infrared Emission of GRB 041219A
Prompt optical emission from the γ-ray burst of GRB 041219A has been reported by Vestrand et al. There was a fast rise of optical emission simultaneous with the dominant γ-ray pulse, and a tight correlation with the prompt γ-ray emission has been displayed. These indicate that the prompt optical emission and γ-ray emission would naturally have a common origin. We propose that this optical compo...
متن کاملGrb 060121: Implications of a Short/intermediate Duration Γ-ray Burst at High Redshift
Since the discovery of the first short-hard γ-ray burst afterglows in 2005, the handful of observed events have been found to be embedded in nearby (z < 1), bright underlying galaxies. We present multiwavelength observations of the short-duration burst GRB 060121, which is the first observed to clearly outshine its host galaxy (by a factor > 10). A photometric redshift for this event places the...
متن کاملFermi Observations of high-energy gamma-ray emissions from GRB 080916C
Observations of the long-duration Gamma-Ray Burst GRB 080916C by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor and Large Area Telescope show that it has a single spectral form from 8 keV to 13.2 GeV. The E > 100 MeV emission was ≈ 5 s later than the E < ∼ 1 MeV emission and lasted much longer even after photons with E < 100 MeV became undetectable. The redshift from GROND of z ≈ 4.35 means that this GRB ha...
